What Every New Parent Needs To Know – How Often Should You Hold A Baby?

When I first became a new parent, it seemed everyone had a little bit of advice that they simply had to share with me. Trouble was, not one piece of advice correlated with the other, and a lot of the things I was told made me feel uncomfortable. On top of that, my own background as a childcare professional working with children right from babies up until their teens, had put me right in the path of hearing over and over again differing and confusing advice.

Luckily for me (and my lovely newborn) previous to having him, I had dedicated a lot of time to reading and researching, and had discovered that I could in fact dispel the most popular myths surrounding new parents. I can’t say I was totally comfortable though; being seemingly the only parent making such drastically different choices from the norm, and going against the grain, had me frequently doubting myself and my actions in the first few months of my sons life. Since then though I have found that the choices I made during that time, were indeed right both for myself and for my son.

In this short video I want to share with you the truth about these common myths, in the hope that you and any new parents in your life can avoid the constant self doubt and worry that so many experience in the early months of their baby’s life.

I’m going to answer the three most common questions that I hear ~

  • How often should a baby be fed?
  • How often should a baby be held?
  • Should I respond to every single cry?

You can watch the video here.

I hope you found the advice in this video useful. I would love to hear from you in the comments – What was the best piece of advice you received as a new or expectant parent and what was the worst?

  1. Great video. I especially liked that you covered babies being held – physical contact is so important for baby. With all the new technologies today it’s still just as important for you to pick up baby and hold him against you.
I think some bad advice is to use the car seat/stroller/bouncer always when baby won’t go to sleep. Sit in a rocker with them against you and it’s much more soothing for them.

  2. I would have liked to watch it.. but… too long! haha! My husband and I were talking, it’s good to make videos about one minute long, people have short attention spans these days 🙂 Maybe break the video down into each topic and make short clips addressing each question?
